History

Clarence Peters began his funeral career in the early 1960’s when he took a part-time job with an ambulance service, which also provided livery vehicles to southern San Joaquin Valley (Golden Valley) funeral homes. Interested in funeral service, he then began serving his apprenticeship with Lloyd’s Chapel in Porterville. Clarence made a life altering decision to dedicate his future to funeral service and in 1967 entered the California Mortuary Science School in Los Angeles. With his training and licensing completed, he ventured out into ownership in 1973. Clarence and Martha Peters purchased Agee Family Funeral Home, 201 Central Valley Highway, Shafter and founded Clarmar Enterprises. Two years later, they purchased Robert L. Jones Funeral Home in Wasco. In 1987 they purchased two of their competitor’s businesses, Mish Funeral Home in Shafter and Mish Funeral Home in Wasco. The businesses were stream-lined into two operations, Peters Funeral Home in Shafter on Lerdo Hwy and Peters Funeral Home in Wasco on Seventh Street. Their five children, Carolyn, Cheryl, Leslie, Franklin and Loren all worked in the family business at one time or another in various capacities. However, their son, Leslie Peters and daughter Cheryl Woody purchased the enterprise in 1994. This was quickly followed by their purchase of J.W. Sams & Son Mortuary in Arvin in 1995. In 2002, Richard D. and Cheryl Woody purchased the operation.
